The figure of Bibi Ostara is an imaginary combination of the Romani Saint Bibi and the goddess, Ostara, of spring. Here the viewer is invited to reimagine the archetype of Springtime, from that of a “maiden” to one of grandmother. This work hopes to place Grandmother at the centre of creation, and to celebrate Her powers of life, renewal, wisdom and beauty.
Once upon a winter, a young woman entered the Underworld. Now she emerges in the spring as an exalted Crone. Guided by insect life and a pale horse, She awakens the restless blossoming energies of creativity in Nature and in humankind. Our minds are stir with flowering potential, the buzzing under our skin propels us forward.
